So, Target is basically the official app for the Target store. I first saw it pop up on the Google Play Store a while back, and it's been a staple on my phone ever since. It's a free app to download and install, which is great. You don't have to register to just browse, but you'll need to create a Target account or sign in to actually buy stuff or save deals. It's got a ton of installs on Google Play, like over 10 million, so it's pretty popular. There are in-app purchases (that's the whole point, really), and yeah, there are in-app ads, but they're all for Target's own products or Circle deals, nothing random.
Using the Target app is pretty straightforward. I usually just open it up, search for what I need, and add it to my cart. A real tip I've picked up is to use the barcode scanner in the app when you're actually in the store. It lets you check prices and see if something has a special discount that isn't marked on the shelf. You can also make a shopping list in the app, which helps me not forget things. For ordering, I always check if something qualifies for free shipping or same-day delivery through Shipt. It's all linked to your Target Circle account, so you automatically earn 1% back on every purchase.
Compared to other shopping apps like the Walmart app or Amazon, I specifically choose the Target app for a few reasons. It's not trying to be everything to everyone like Amazon. It's more curated, and the app's design feels cleaner to me. The Target Circle loyalty program is also way better integrated than Walmart's rewards system, in my opinion. Plus, having the Drive Up service right in the app is a lifesaver. I can order, check in when I'm in the parking lot, and they bring it to my car. Amazon doesn't have that in my area, and Walmart's pickup process feels clunkier.
Capabilities
- π Drive Up & Order Pickup: This is the killer feature for me. No other big retailer app has this as smooth. I place the order, the app tells me when it's ready, and I can use the "I'm on my way" button. I tap it when I'm pulling into the parking lot, and someone brings the stuff right to my car. Walmart's pickup is similar, but it requires a scheduled time slot instead of the on-demand feel Target's app has.
- π― Target Circle Integrations: The app is the brain for their loyalty program. It stores all your offers, you can digitally clip coupons, and you get 1% back in rewards. Amazon's Prime is a paid subscription, while Walmart's rewards are less immediate. The Target app automatically applies your coupons and Circle deals at checkout, which I find way more user-friendly than other apps where you have to remember to use codes.
- π Barcode Scanner & In-Store Mode: When I'm physically in the store, I use the app's scanner to check if an online exclusive deal is actually better than the shelf price. I also use it to find where items are located on the aisle map. Walmart's app has a scanner too, but it often lags or gives me wrong inventory data. The Target app's scanner is more consistently accurate for real-time stock.
Highlights
- πͺ Seamless Drive Up Experience: The app makes the entire Drive Up process frictionless. I can place the order, get a notification, and pick it up without ever getting out of the car. No other app I've used, not even Kroger's or Safeway's, executes this as well.
- πͺ Intuitive RedCard Linking: If you have a Target RedCard, the app links it perfectly. You get the 5% discount instantly without clipping a coupon. The Amazon Store Card integration is fine, but the Target app makes it feel like a native part of the checkout flow.
- πͺ Consistent UI Design: The app is just pretty to look at and easy to navigate. The Walmart app looks like a cluttered spreadsheet in comparison. The Target app uses clear categories and high-quality images, which makes browsing for clothes or home goods enjoyable.
Lowlights
- π Occasional Lag with Circle Offers: Sometimes when I clip a bunch of Circle deals, the app takes a while to load the "added" confirmation. It's a small annoyance compared to the Amazon app, which has instant feedback on coupon clipping.
- π Price Inconsistency: The app sometimes shows a different price for an item than the shelf tag. Not a huge deal, but it's a bit frustrating when I have to go ask a team member to price match the app's price. Walmart's app doesn't seem to have this issue as often.
- π Wishlist Limitations: The Target app's "Favorites" list feels pretty basic. It doesn't send price-drop alerts like the Amazon app's "Wish List" does. I often miss out on sales for items I saved because the app never notifies me.
- π Battery Hog: I've noticed the Target app drains my phone's battery faster than other shopping apps like the Walgreens app. It seems to run in the background more aggressively, even when I close it.
