Blossom - Plant Identifier

Editor Evaluation
Blossom is a plant identification app from Mosaic Srl that I downloaded off Google Play last year to help me figure out all the greenery in my apartment. It uses your phone's camera to identify plants, flowers, and even trees by snapping a photo. The app first launched back in 2019 and has racked up over 1 million installs on the Google Play Store, with a similar version available on the App Store. It's totally free to download, and you can start using it right away without needing to register for an account, which I found super convenient. There is an optional in-app purchase for Blossom Premium that unlocks a care tracker and unlimited reminders, but the free version covers basic identification just fine. You do get some in-app ads after a few uses, though they aren't too annoying.
Using Blossom is pretty straightforward. You just fire up the app, point your camera at any leaf or flower, and tap the capture button. The app shows you the top matches within a few seconds. I usually make sure the lighting is decent, because dim shots sometimes get confused results. One tip I picked up: try to zoom in on just the leaf or petal instead of the whole plant, as the app works better with detailed close-ups. You can also save identified plants to a personal garden inside the app, which lets you keep notes on watering or sunlight needs. It's a nice way to track all my different houseplants without mixing them up.
Compared to other plant identifier apps like PictureThis or PlantSnap, I stuck with Blossom because the free version actually feels usable. PictureThis constantly pushed a subscription on me after one scan, while Blossom lets me do multiple identifications daily without paying. Plus, I found Blossom's interface less cluttered and easier on the eyes. The matched names seemed accurate for common houseplants, too, so I didn't feel the need to upgrade right away.
Capabilities
- 🌿 The standout feature for me is the offline identification mode. Unlike PlantSnap, which requires a internet connection to work, Blossom lets you snap and identify plants even when you're hiking in the middle of nowhere. This was a lifesaver during a camping trip where I had zero signal.
- 🌿 Another great feature is the care reminders. After you identify a plant, you can set custom watering and fertilizing schedules. The free version gives you a few reminders, while the premium version unlocks unlimited ones. It's much more focused than similar apps like PictureThis, which hides most reminders behind a paywall.
- 🌿 I also like the disease diagnosis tool. You can snap a photo of a sick leaf, and Blossom tries to pinpoint the issue, like overwatering or pests. It isn't perfect but gives you a solid starting point. This is something PlantSnap lacks entirely.
Highlights
- 🏆 Blossom has a cleaner interface compared to PictureThis, which feels like it's cramming ads and upgrade prompts into every screen. No clutter, just simple identification.
- 🏆 The app is genuinely free for daily use. I can identify up to five plants per day without any cost. PlantSnap locks you to a single free scan before asking for money.
- 🏆 The offline mode is a huge win over both PictureThis and PlantSnap. No other identifier offers this level of usability in remote areas.
Lowlights
- ⚠️ The identification accuracy drops significantly for rare or tropical plants. PictureThis often gives better results for exotic species, so I end up double-checking there sometimes.
- ⚠️ The in-app ads pop up more frequently than I'd like. PlantSnap has fewer ads in its free tier, making the experience feel smoother.
- ⚠️ The free version's plant database seems limited. I've hit cases where common weeds or wildflowers weren't recognized at all, while PlantSnap nailed them immediately.
