It first launched back in 2015 and is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. On Google Play, the app has been downloaded over 10 million times, which shows how popular it really is. The app is completely free to download and use, and you do not need to register or sign up for an account just to get started. However, there are some in-app purchases if you want to unlock extra filters or remove the small banner ads that show up at the bottom of the screen. Honestly, the free version works well enough for most people.

Using Pencil Sketch is pretty straightforward. You open the app, pick a photo from your gallery or take a new one with your camera, and then choose from a few different sketch styles. There are options like a simple pencil outline, a colored sketch, or even a charcoal effect. The app processes the image instantly, so you do not have to wait long. If you want better results, try picking photos with strong contrast and clear edges. Selfies or pictures with busy backgrounds do not always look as clean. You can also adjust the brightness and contrast before applying the effect to get a more detailed sketch. Once you are happy, you can save the image to your phone or share it straight to social media.

I have tried plenty of sketch maker apps over the years, like Prisma or Sketch Me, but I keep coming back to Pencil Sketch for one simple reason: it does exactly what it says without any fuss. Prisma has more artistic filters, sure, but it feels slower and requires an internet connection for many of its effects. Sketch Me works fine, but it pushes ads too aggressively. Pencil Sketch feels lighter on the phone, works offline for the basic styles, and the interface is clean and easy to navigate. For a free app, it delivers solid results without asking for too much in return. That is why it stays on my phone after all these years.

• ❌ Banner ads can be distracting: While the app is free, those little ads at the bottom of the screen can get annoying, especially when you are trying to preview your edited image. Apps like Artomaton do a better job of keeping ads out of the way.
• ❌ No batch editing option: You have to process each photo one at a time. There is no way to select multiple images and apply the same sketch effect to all of them. That would be a useful feature for anyone working on a series of images, but it just is not there yet.
• ❌ Output resolution is sometimes lower: The saved sketch images can look a bit smaller or grainier than the original photo, especially if you use the free version. Some paid apps let you export in full resolution, but here you are stuck with a minor quality drop.
