Editor Evaluation
Genral Tv | Video Player is a media player app that lets you watch videos and stream content from various sources. I first came across it on Google Play a few months ago, and it's been handy for playing local video files on my phone. The app is free to download, and you can install it without any registration. There are no forced sign-ups, which is a big plus for me. It does have in-app ads, though, which pop up from time to time, and there are in-app purchases available if you want to remove those ads or unlock extra features. On Google Play, it shows a decent number of installs, but it's not as huge as some other players. Before using it, I recommend clearing your device's cache to avoid any lag during playback. A good tip is to adjust the brightness and volume by swiping on the screen, which makes it easy to control without pausing the video. Compared to VLC or MX Player, which also offer similar playback options, Genral Tv feels more straightforward but lacks some of the advanced codec support those apps have. I picked this app over others because its interface is simple and it handles most common video formats without needing extra plugins.
Capabilities
- ๐บ The standout feature for me is the hardware acceleration, which makes video playback smooth even on older devices. In contrast, VLC sometimes stutters with high-resolution files on my phone, but Genral Tv handles them better.
- ๐บ It has a built-in equalizer that lets you tweak audio settings like bass and treble, which I don't get with the default video player on my phone. MX Player has this too, but Genral Tv's version is easier to access.
- ๐บ The app supports background playback, so I can keep listening to audio from a video while using other apps. This is a feature I miss in some other players like BSPlayer.
- ๐บ There's a floating window mode that lets me watch videos in a small pop-up while browsing the web or texting. It's not unique, but it works reliably on Genral Tv compared to some others I have tried.
Highlights
- ๐ One strength is its lightweight design compared to VLC. Genral Tv takes up less storage on my device and still plays most videos well.
- ๐ The automatic subtitle detection feature is solid. It finds and loads subtitles from the same folder without any hassle, unlike MX Player which sometimes requires manual selection.
- ๐ The simple layout is a big win for me. Other apps like KMPlayer clutter the screen with too many options, but Genral Tv keeps things clean and focused on playback.
- ๐ Battery usage seems lower during extended viewing sessions. I noticed this when I compared it to VLC over a two-hour movie.
Lowlights
- ๐ The ad frequency is a bit annoying. While VLC is completely ad-free, Genral Tv shows ads after a few videos, which can interrupt the experience.
- ๐ Codec compatibility is limited. It struggles with some newer video formats that MX Player handles easily, so I have to convert those files sometimes.
- ๐ No cloud streaming support here. Apps like VLC let you stream from network drives, but Genral Tv only plays local files or direct URLs.
- ๐ The update cycle is inconsistent. I have not seen new versions on Google Play as often as I do for other players, which makes me worry about long-term support.
