Here Comes the Bus is a school bus GPS tracking app that lets parents, guardians, and school staff know exactly where a child's bus is at any moment. The app first launched back in 2015 and has since become a staple for school districts across the US. You can grab it for free on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. In fact, on Google Play alone, it's been downloaded and installed over 500,000 times. While you do need to sign up with a code provided by your child's school district, the actual app download is totally free. There aren't any in-app purchases or annoying in-app ads, which is a huge plus for a tool like this.
Using the app is pretty straightforward once you're set up. After you install the app and enter your school's code, you can see a real-time map showing the bus icon moving along its route. The best part is you can set up push notifications for specific events, like when the bus is one mile away or when it's within three minutes of your stop. A tip I've picked up: make sure to customize your “arrival zone” radius right in the settings. If you set it too narrow, you might miss the alert if the bus moves faster. If you set it too wide, you'll be waiting outside forever. I usually keep it at about a five-minute radius so I get a heads-up without rushing.
Compared to other similar apps like BusWhere or SafeStop, Here Comes the Bus stands out because of its simplicity and reliability. I've tried a few other school bus trackers, and some of them are clunky with outdated maps or slow refresh rates. With Here Comes the Bus, the map updates every few seconds, and the GPS data feels accurate to within a block or two. Plus, since it's tied directly to the school district's bus routing system, it doesn't rely on the bus driver's phone battery or cellular signal as much. Other apps sometimes drop the connection mid-route, but this one has been rock solid for our family. I honestly chose it because it's the default for our district, but after using it, I wouldn't switch to anything else.
Capabilities
- 🚍 Real-time bus tracking with a moving map icon is the standout feature. Unlike SafeStop which sometimes has a noticeable lag, Here Comes the Bus updates the bus position every few seconds. You can literally watch it turn the corner onto your street.
- 🚍 Customizable push notifications are a lifesaver. You can get alerts for when the bus is a set distance away, when it arrives at the school, or even if there's a schedule change. I've set mine to ping me five minutes before the bus hits the stop, and it's dead accurate.
- 🚍 The “child assignment” feature lets you track multiple kids on different buses from one account. If you have a middle schooler and a high schooler on different routes, you can see both buses on the same screen. No need to flip between tabs or apps.
- 🚍 It works even when the bus driver forgets to turn on the app. Some trackers rely on driver activation, but this one uses the bus's GPS unit, so tracking stays live as long as the bus engine is running. That's way more reliable than BusWhere which sometimes goes dark if the driver doesn't log in.
Highlights
- 🔐 Strong security and privacy. You need a unique school district code to even register. SafeStop lets anyone browse nearby buses if the school doesn't lock it down, which feels sketchy. Here Comes the Bus keeps everything locked to your family.
- 🔐 Battery-friendly background mode. The app doesn't drain your phone battery like some other trackers that keep the screen on. Even if I just let it sit in my pocket, it sends notifications without killing my battery by lunchtime.
- 🔐 Customer support is actually helpful. I've emailed them twice about a glitch on the web portal, and they responded within 24 hours with a fix. Compared to BusWhere where I got a generic reply a week later, it's a huge win.
Lowlights
- ⚠️ The web version is clunky. On the Google Play Store, the mobile app works fine, but the desktop browser version sometimes fails to load the map. I've had to refresh it several times. SafeStop's web interface is smoother in that regard.
- ⚠️ No historical route data. You can't look back at where the bus was an hour ago or check yesterday's arrival time. If your kid misses the bus, you can't rewind the map to see exactly where it went. Other apps like BusWhere offer a playback feature.
- ⚠️ Notification delays on Android sometimes. I get a “bus arrived” alert a full two minutes after the bus has already driven away. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does, it's super frustrating. The iOS version seems to be more consistent.
